Belly dancing, ages old, is
a dance for women performed by women. It was not designed for men,
although men DO enjoy this seductive form of dance. Honestly belly dancing
originated in Harems centuries ago, as the women in harems wanted to prepare
their bodies for child birth, stay fit and pass along their trade to their
daughters. Many of the moves are an imitation of the way a woman's body
sways while walking. This type of dance originates from various countries
such as Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Greece and Israel. Each country celebrates their
form of dance very differently; some using more hip gestures, or more foot
gestures. Variations are also seen in costuming and music. This form of dance,
despite its country of origin, is the dance of isolation. Most moves are
isolated and concentrated. They are subtle and distinct. This art form takes
great concentration of mind and body which is exactly how I began dancing. For
me, it was a form of therapy, allowing my mind to be to busy; concentrating on
the dance, and not allow every day worries, (both big and small) to enter in.
For me personally, dancing became my outlet for a major stress that went on in
my life for years. I have shared dance and spoke to youth groups regarding the
details of my family’s very personal crisis and subsequent triumph. It was
extremely beneficial for the girls I’ve spoken with to have some fun with the
dance and music and learn that there are alternative forms of therapy as opposed
to traditional medication and counseling; although they too are extremely
beneficial. I don't claim to be a therapist but I do know how to utilize dancing
to aid in emotional healing. A dancing body in motion, is a spirit readying
itself to soar.
The constant motion and concentrated movements, such as shimmies and undulations
are an intense form of exercise. A half hour of aerobic belly dancing would burn
more than a fair share of calories as well as cause you to use body parts you
don't usually work out. With practice, it is amazing to see what your body can
do. The countless foot, hip, head and arm movements are therapeutic to the mind,
body and soul.
